Where does it go?

In 2005 the European Union introduced the WEEE directive, ensuring that Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment are disposed of responsibly. Effectively, from 2006 no electrical equipment can be put in land-fill and all must be recycled. The following items are disposable under the WEEE Directive.

After collection we sort the WEEE according to whether it is to be refurbished or recycled. Where possible, we will refurbish most computer equipment, such as PCs, laptops, Monitors, keyboards, mice, fax machines, photocopiers and printers. We erase any memory stored in accordance to US DoD standards’; ensuring all of your information is safely destroyed, before reinstalling an Operating System. We then PAT check to ensure the equipment is still in good working order and test all it’s functions.

Once refurbished, equipment is either sold on or donated to various charities, such as local Youth Groups in the Huntingdonshire area.
The more complicated hardware, such as Servers, has the memory erased, and is then bench tested and sold onto specialist dealers.

Ok, so what about really old equipment or stuff that cannot be used?

We breakdown the equipment to its component parts, separating plastics, metals and glass. If hard drives and equipment with memories have to be destroyed we grind these down to 3mm pellets, they are bagged and again the two core materials are separated, usually plastic and metal and then recycled.

But what about batteries, florescent strips and traditional light bulbs?

Batteries are separated into basic materials, such as plastics and metal, these are recycled. The battery’s internal material is then grounds down, and again, this is recycled.

Light bulbs and strips have mainly two component parts, aluminum and glass, both are recycled. So there we have it, absolutely nothing goes to land-fill; everything is re-used somewhere, in something! We operate in full within the law and create a full audit on everything we process. We know from when waste electrical arrives until we dispose of the products where it has come from and where it went to.
